Vajda Papir’s new PM2 tissue machine went into operation in July 2022. Dosing systems from Alltech are part of this state-of-the-art tissue production line, which has a capacity of 80,000 tons per year.

Alltech’s dosing systems are used in process water treatment, as well as in the production of the tissue (tissue paper is an absorbent, finely creped hygiene paper made from cellulose).

As early as May 2022, Alltech supplied a mother tank and dosing stations to Vadja Papir as part of the first stage of the project.

Various additives are dosed into the production process of the sanitary paper to increase the wet strength properties. Other positive effects of using the additives are the improvement of retention and drainage in the production process.

The liquid additives are delivered in IBCs.

The mother tank is a storage and dosing system for the safe handling of standard IBCs (industrial bulk containers).

The IBCs are positioned directly on the mother tank with the help of a forklift or lifting device and completely emptied into it.

The volume of the mother tank allows a new IBC to be emptied with a liquid reserve of 10-50% in the mother tank. This ensures a continuous supply to the dosing system and the timing of the transfer process does not have to be monitored precisely.

The mother tank is placed in a bund, which protects the production environment from chemicals in case of leakage.

The dosing stations are mounted on a wall mounting plate or floor mounted. They are used for the dosing of chemicals into different process sections of the paper production.

Preparation of neat polymer and dosing of retention agent into the production process and for process water treatment.

In the production of paper, the components that later constitute the paper are feeded tot he paper machine as a diluted aqueous slurry and filtered. This process of filtration is improved and sometimes accelerated by retention agents.

“In this process, the quality of the polymer solution used is very important and has a direct influence on the paper quality,” adds Ladislaus Bach, head of marketing and sales at Alltech Dosieranlagen GmbH, who played a leading role in this project.

In a second phase of the project, Alltech supplied another mother tank and a CONTINUFLOC preparation and dosing system with EMMI (the electromechanical mixing system for saving polymer concentrate) and three dosing stations. One dosing station supplies the flotation plant (DAF) with polymer solution for process water treatment. The other two dosing stations supply the paper machine with polymer solution.

CONTINUFLOC systems are fully automatic two-chamber pendulum systems for polymer preparation. For special applications with increased requirements, the CONTINUFLOC can be additionally equipped with an EMMI electromechanical mixing system. This is characterized by optimum concentrate mixing and thus maximum efficiency. This results in reduced material and resource consumption.

The preparation and dosing system used at Vajda Papir produces a maximum of 4000 l/h of ready-to-use polymer solution.

Ladislaus Bach says of the Vajda project: “It was a picture-book start! Careful planning, good preparation and an experienced team enabled a smooth start-up on schedule at the specified time.”

The trade fair highlights at this year’s IFAT include the robust FKM piston diaphragm dosing pump with new, intelligent iReg control system and the POLYMAT V9 with new control system.

Our piston diaphragm dosing pump with iReg independently regulates and monitors the specified dosing quantity and the system pressure. All operating and failure messages are displayed, stored and digitally reported. The new control system of the POLYMAT V9 enables communication with the control centre via Profibus DP or Ethernet/Profinet.

One of the largest and most modern wastewater treatment plants in Germany, with a treatment capacity of up to 200,000 cum/day, uses the SBR process to treat Berlin’s wastewater. The process water treatment of the wastewater treatment plant uses systems from Alltech.

In dry weather, six wastewater treatment plants in Berlin treat around 624,000 cubic meters of water every day. Almost one third of this wastewater volume is handled by a single plant, one of the largest and most modern in Germany. Wastewater treatment here takes place in the SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactor) process, a variant of the conventional activated sludge process. Since 2017, the wastewater treatment plant has been undergoing additional expansion and modernization as part of extensive construction measures, with the main focus of the work planned up to 2025 being on central process water treatment. Storage tanks and dosing stations for caustic soda dosing

Since the function of the SBR process is decisive for the effectiveness of the process water purification, each SBR receives its own caustic hydroxide dosing station with 2 FKM piston-diaphragm dosing pumps each (one dosing pump “duty”, one dosing pump “stand-by”).

The sodium hydroxide dosing controls the pH value in the SBR to be within a predetermined setpoint range. The sodium hydroxide addition is controlled by the pH measurement: If the pH value falls below the previously defined minimum pH value, sodium hydroxide is added; if it rises above a predefined maximum value, dosing stops.

CYLINDRICAL TANKS FOR THE STORAGE OF SODIUM HYDROXIDE

For this project, Alltech supplied three cylindrical tanks for the storage of sodium hydroxide with collection bunds for indoor installation. The tanks have a maximum usable volume of 25000 l each, are designed according to WHG and have the design approval Z.4021-27 of the German Institute for Construction Technology (DIBt). The storage tanks have an access ladder with back fall protection and a platform so that the safe operations and maintenance is ensured.

TABESY tank filling systems are mounted on the outside wall of the hall and are equipped with a safety shutdown and a warning system.

Alltech’s robust and proven piston diaphragm dosing pumps are installed in a protective cabinet (PE) with transparent sliding doors and leakage tray. In this way, operating personnel are protected from spray leakage at all times and still have an unrestricted view of the operating status of the dosing system.

MOTHER TANK WITH DOSING STATION FOR DEFOAMER FOR FOAM CONTROL

In the PNAA process (biological sludge water denitrification with partial nitritation and anaerobic ammonium oxidation) used in process water treatment of this wastewater treatment plant, foaming must be expected at times. However, the addition of defoamer is not always necessary. First, foam control is carried out with service water. Only in a second stage, if necessary, foam control is carried out with defoamer and process water.

The defoamer is dosed by means of piston-diaphragm dosing pumps, installed in a protective cabinet located in a process water treatment building. Here, as well, one dosing pump is provided “on-duty”, one “stand-by”.

The defoamer is supplied in IBCs and placed on the mother tank. This mother tank is a storage system for the safe handling of chemicals when using standard chemotainers. Chemotainers are positioned directly on the tank with the help of a forklift truck or lifting device, and are emptied  into the tank completely.

The volume of the tank permits emptying of a new IBC with still having a liquid reserve of 10-50 percent in the tank. In this way, a continuous supply to the dosing system is ensured and the timing of the transfer process does not have to be monitored precisely.

With dosing systems for chemicals, Alltech Dosieranlagen GmbH provides the essential basis for the treatment of regeneration water and the production of ultrapure water and deionate, and supports customers in the crude oil and natural gas processing industries.

With about 205 million tonnes of oil and 92 billion cubic metres of natural gas, the North Sea is the largest offshore production area. Complex systems are required for the extraction, storage, transport and processing of these important fossil fuels and raw materials. Large quantities of water are required for the majority of these processes. In most cases, however, this is not “ordinary” water, but water that has been specially treated. Very often demineralized water (deionized water) and ultrapure water are used, which are characterized by their chemical composition and the resulting physical properties.

The elaborate methods of water treatment in turn are based on the targeted use of various systems and chemicals that trigger the required processes with precise dosing. With state-of-the-art dosing systems, Alltech Dosieranlagen GmbH enables international customers to precisely dose the required chemicals, thus ensuring safe, reliable and efficient operation of the systems involved.

Example of use of the Alltech dosing pumps

“In a current project, one of our customers, a global player in the oil and gas industry in the northeast of England, is integrating our dosing systems into their system for regenerating ion exchangers,” Ladislaus Bach, Head of Sales at Alltech Dosieranlagen GmbH, explains. “These are indispensable in deionate and subsequent ultrapure water production. Only regular regeneration ensures their function in the long term. Precise coordination of the chemicals used is crucial here, and the simplest and most reliable handling possible for the customer is also of the utmost economic importance, of course.”

46 percent soda lye and 96 percent sulfuric acid are used in the regeneration of ion exchangers and in wastewater treatment. A very wide performance range must be covered for their dosing and supply, which is why the customer required dosing pumps that are as linear as possible as well as adjustable in dosing from 0 to 100%. Only in this way can the pump performance be optimally adapted to the variable process parameters.

Dosing stations for acid dosing by Alltech

In close cooperation with the customer, Alltech’s experts decided to use two dosing stations each for acid and lye dosing. Built into a chemical-resistant protective cabinet made of bimodal polyethylene (PE 100), transparent sliding doors provide maximum splash protection with a permanently unobstructed view of the dosing stations. A tray integrated into the protective cabinet prevents chemicals from escaping and contamination of the production environment in the event of a leak.

The individual dosing stations are equipped with the tried and tested piston diaphragm dosing pumps of the Alltech FKM series. Their dosing capacity can be freely selected and therefore easily adapted to the requirements of process engineering. Here, the pump output is controlled by the SERVOSET stroke length positioning system. By means of a servomotor with integrated position controller and limit switch, the dosing can be adjusted continuously in a linear manner in the range between 0 and 100%. Both local position indication and remote indication via an integrated analogue output are possible.

Optionally, the dosing pump can also be replaced by the FKMi model with intelligent iReg control. iReg controls the pump independently and monitors predefined parameters such as dosing quantity and system pressure. The performance values are displayed, stored and reported digitally.
