Alltech is supplying a polymer concentrate dosing station and a POLYMAT polyelectrolyte dissolving station for the recommissioning of an Irish zinc and lead mine. The dosing station is directly attached to the dissolving plant.

The POLYMAT is a fully automatic, continuous or discontinuous polyelectrolyte dissolving station that operates according to the three-chamber flow-through principle. A POLYMAT 4000 was built for this project, which delivers a maximum of 4000 l/h of ready-to-use solution.

Polymer treatment plants are used in process water treatment and to support the dewatering of sludge produced in the mining production process. Polymer in liquid form (polymer concentrate) or as granules is first treated in the polyelectrolyte dissolving station so that it can then be used.

Positive effects on the environment

The processing of zinc and lead ores produces fine sludge and process water. The aim is to aggregate these fine particles (from the raw material extraction process) into flocs so that they can be more easily settled or filtered.

This facilitates the subsequent particle separation in a dewatering machine (a press or centrifuge) and the recovery of clear water for recirculation into the system.

Process water treatment reduces fresh water consumption in zinc and lead extraction. Another positive effect for the environment is that the sludge produced during raw material extraction is better dewatered. Dewatering improves the efficiency of subsequent processes such as incineration or composting of the sludge.

The use of caustic soda (NaOH) in refineries is used, for example, to treat water and regulate the pH value in processes.

In order to comply with the legal requirements for water that is treated in municipal wastewater treatment plants, wastewater from refineries must be treated before being discharged into the public wastewater network.

Caustic soda is also used in petrochemical processes to regulate the pH value.

The dilution station for caustic soda is installed in a chemical-resistant, accessible protective cabinet. The protective cabinet is suitable for outdoor installation and protects the operating personnel and the dosing technology from adverse weather conditions.

The piston diaphragm dosing pumps from the FKMCN series have a maximum dosing capacity of 1536 l/h at 50 Hz and 4 bar. The integrated overpressure safety valve ensures maximum safety.

Alltech offers tanks with a usable volume of 2 m³ to 19 m³ in the ComPhos compact series for storing chemicals. In the standard series, the usable volume ranges up to 39 m³. The cylindrical tanks made of PE have the general technical approval of the DIBt (German Institute for Building Technology) and therefore comply with the regulations of the WHG (Water Resources Act). For outdoor installation, an earthquake design may be required, as well as tank insulation for cold and heat protection. In order to protect the environment from the ingress of chemicals in the event of a leak, the tanks are placed in a WHG-compliant drip tray.

As an alternative to tank filling via a dosing station, fast and safe chemical filling from a tank truck is also possible with the TABESY tank filling system.

The TABESY tank filling system is attached directly to a storage tank and is equipped with a drip tray.

Chemical storage tank and dilution station.

The production of cocoa and nougat products generates wastewater that can be contaminated with both organic residues from production and chemicals from cleaning the production facilities. Before this contaminated wastewater can be fed into a municipal wastewater treatment plant, it must be treated in order to comply with environmental regulations.

We have supplied a dosing station for neutralisation with a buffer tank to a chocolate manufacturer in our neighbourhood for pre-treatment in order to increase the pH-value.

The caustic soda required for neutralisation is supplied and stored in IBCs.

The FKM piston diaphragm dosing pump with electro-hydraulic drive and modern iReg V1 control system is responsible for dosing the caustic soda.

In order to protect the production environment and the environment from chemical contamination in the event of a leak, the dosing station is completely enclosed in a collecting basin, which was manufactured by us in accordance with the safety and quality regulations of the DVS and DIBt and is designed in accordance with the German Water Resources Act (WHG).

The supplied buffer tank is used for the intermediate storage of waste water. The waste water is produced in batches in large quantities at once. It is gradually fed into the treatment process.

Our DVS 2212-certified welding specialists recently mastered an exciting challenge: the assembly of a 25 m³ storage tank for chemical precipitants, designed for earthquake zone 1 under exceptional conditions.
We usually transport our chemical storage tanks ‘in one piece’ by truck directly to the site, where they are set up and assembled. But this project was different:

• The tank was delivered in segments.
• The individual segments were then transported to the basement of the technical building of a wastewater treatment plant.
• There, the tank was expertly welded together on site by our team.

Thanks to the expertise of our employees and precise planning, the storage tank was assembled safely and efficiently even under these special circumstances.

Storage tank for chemicals.

Wastewater treatment has been taking place in Waßmannsdorf for more than 100 years. The wastewater treatment plant in Schönefeld, Brandenburg, supplies the citizens of Berlin and the surrounding area with clean water and contributes to environmental protection. As part of the expansion of the purification capacity of the wastewater treatment plant, Alltech was able to supply flocculant systems with dosing stations and post-dilution and a dosing station for defoamers with post-dilution for the flocculation filtration system.

From preliminary purification to flocculation filtration

In the wastewater treatment plant, the wastewater is first cleaned mechanically and biologically. In the flocculation filtration plant, suspended solids and phosphates are concentrated into larger flocs using polymer flocculants and then retained in sand filters. This reduces the nutrient input into the water, supports the water cycle and thus conserves drinking water resources.

A fully automatic solution and dosing system for polymer flocculants CONTINUFLOC is used at the Waßmannsdorf wastewater treatment plant. To create redundancy for maintenance and repair, the solution and dosing system is designed in two lines. The two lines can be fed alternately with either liquid polymer concentrate or granulate. One dosing station is used for viscous media (polymer concentrate). This dosing station was delivered completely assembled on a stand console ready for operation. In the event of leakage, the dosing stations are placed in a chemical collecting pan. The collection pan is made of PE 100 and manufactured in accordance with DVS (German Association for Welding and Allied Processes) and DIBt (German Institute for Building Technology) regulations. For the polymer granulate, which is used as an alternative, Alltech supplied a complete BIG BAG discharge station with two AIRLIFT powder conveyors.

No unpleasant foams

Biologically purified wastewater flows into the flocculation filtration system. This contains tensides, which can lead to visually undesirable foaming. To prevent this, the Waßmannsdorf sewage treatment plant uses a dosing station for defoamers mounted on a wall mounting plate in a chemical collecting pan. The splash guard prevents splash leaks and thus protects operating personnel and the environment.

A total of three dosing pumps from the FKM series for viscous media are used. The pumps are designed so that, if necessary, all dosing points can be supplied with one dosing pump.

When water from households is discharged into the sewage system, this is accompanied by a certain amount of odour pollution. Certain substances in the water cause an unpleasant odour. Our solution? A targeted dosage of calcium nitrate solution to neutralise odours at an early stage.

A storage and dosing station with a chemical storage tank with a usable volume of 5 m3 is used in this project. The system operates autonomously via the PROCON dosing quantity control system.

As part of the modernisation of the production plant of a leading manufacturer of synthetic rubber, we supplied a customised CONTINUFLOC polymer treatment system. This polymer treatment system plays an important role in the treatment of flotate with AOX (adsorbable organic halogen compounds) in order to safely comply with the strict legal limits for AOX contamination in waste water.
This is our contribution to environmental protection and sustainable production in the rubber industry.
